However, the development was severely slowed down by countless injuries. In total, Duckworth had to go under the knife eight times (!): The elbow, the foot, the shoulder - almost everything had to be treated surgically. That's why, despite his age, he has only played 111 matches on the ATP tour - and only won 43 of them. A stand-up man In the meantime he slipped to 1072nd place in the world rankings. But the son of a doctor ("my father wasn't sure I could get back to full fitness before the last operation") never gave up and fought his way back. He was rewarded for all his hard work this season: he won 18 matches, including one against Sinner, and worked his way up to 56th place. In Sofia, Duckworth has so far defeated the Finnish Emil Ruusuvuori and Benoit Paire from France. "It's only after you've been on the sidelines for a few years that you realize how special it is to be on these courts," he said before this year's Wimbledon tournament. On Friday, Duckworth wants to achieve the next coup with a win against Sinner. The man from Sexten, on the other hand, is pushing for revenge, as defending his title in Sofia is the intended goal. Sinner and Duckworth have met not just once, but twice. The two met for the first time in 250 in the first round of the ATP 2020 tournament in Cologne. The young South Tyrolean won 6:1, 6:2.
