Spain's hope goes out: Rublev defeats Alcaraz

Carlos Alcaraz lost the quarterfinals of the Masters 1000 tournament in Madrid against Andrey Rublev from Russia on Wednesday evening.

Carlos Alcaraz's reign at the Masters 1000 tournament in Madrid is over for the time being. The Spaniard, seeded number two, lost to the Russian Andrey Rublev 14:1, 59:6, 4:3 after 6:2 hours on Wednesday after 6 wins en suite in this important preparatory tournament for the French Open. Alcaraz was therefore denied a hat trick.

Incidentally, Alcaraz would have become the first player since Dominic Thiem to reach the Madrid semi-finals three times in a row. Thiem managed to do this four times en suite from 2017 to 2019 and also in 2021 (not held in 2020 due to Corona).

The 26-year-old Rublev leveled the score at 1-1 in the head-to-head with Alcaraz with his most valuable win so far this season. His next opponent in the semifinals is Taylor Fritz (USA-12) or Francisco Cerundolo (ARG-21).

Rybakina continues to fight

For women, number 1000 seed Elena Rybakina had a lot of trouble in the all-Kazakh duel with Yulia Putintseva at the WTA 4 tournament at the same venue. Only after 2:48 hours did she prevail with 4:6, 7:6(4), 7:5 and is the third player in the quarter-finals after Iga Swiatek (POL-1) and Madison Keys (USA-18). Rybakina will now face the winner of the last quarter-final between the young star Mirra Andreeva (RUS), who has just turned 17, and defending champion Aryna Sabalenka (BLR-2).
