The defending champion was also eliminated in Rome

After top seed Novak Djokovic, last year's winner Daniil Medvedev also failed early at the Masters 1000 tournament in Rome.

The number two seeded Russian lost to the American Tommy Paul (ATP 16) on Tuesday in the round of 1 with a score of 6,4:6:XNUMX. Medvedev, who reached the finals of the Australian Open in January and Indian Wells in March, is unrecognizable on clay courts this year. In Monte Carlo the round of XNUMX was the end of the game; in Madrid he had to retire in the quarter-finals with hip pain.

But the 2021 US Open winner is far from the only top player who is struggling almost two weeks before the start of the French Open. Of the eight players from the top ten who will compete in Rome, five have already been eliminated. On Tuesday, in addition to de Minaur, the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov was also affected. As is well known, Jannik Sinner (2) is missing due to a hip injury, and Carlos Alcaraz (3) has a sore arm.
