Wimbledon: It starts tomorrow

Wimbledon is the third Grand Slam tournament of the year. Because the Lawn Tennis Championships have been held since 1877, the only Grand Slam tournament on grass is probably the most renowned and important tennis tournament in the world. No other tennis event has as much spirit as the one in southwest London. So it's no wonder that Wimbledon is a hit not only locally, but also on TV. 378,8 million television viewers from 198 countries watched Wimbledon last year. In Great Britain alone, 17,3 million viewers tuned in to the final between winner Andy Murray and his final opponent Novak Djokovic. 15.388 hours of reports on the tennis classic were broadcast around the world.

But when it comes to new media, the numbers are also impressive. 19,7 million different users visited the official Wimbledon website. 54,6 million pages were accessed from 432 million visits. 1,5 million likes were counted on Facebook, and 700.000 Twitterers wanted to be informed promptly about what was happening on the “Holy Lawn”.

28 tons of strawberries

Although they rely on the latest technology and media, Wimbledon sticks to tradition. Most of the playing clothing must be kept white. The lawn must be exactly eight millimeters high. The games for places 2 to 19 start daily at 12.30 p.m. CEST. On Center Court and on Court 1, however, play only starts at 14 p.m. CEST, with the finals starting an hour later. The schedule for the following day will be announced around 19 p.m. the day before, while the tableau draw will take place on Friday, June 20th at 11 a.m. CEST.

Catering for the 38.500 spectators every day is an organizational and logistical challenge. Last year alone, 300.000 cups of tea, 250.000 bottles of water, 190.000 sandwiches, 135.000 portions of ice cream and 100.000 pints of beer were sold. Also consumed were 30.000 liters of milk, 28 tons of strawberries, 25.000 bottles of champagne, 15.000 bananas and 6000 pizzas baked in a stone oven.

Almost 29 million euros in prize money

Guests are looked after by 1800 catering specialists. A total of almost 5000 people work every day to ensure that everything around the tennis courts, in the various offices and counters runs smoothly.

The game is for prize money of almost 29 million euros. Almost 14 balls are worn out during the 55.000 days of the tournament. Yellow felt balls as established in 1986. The defending champions are Andy Murray for men and the French Marion Bartoly for women. Andreas Seppi and Karin Knapp reached the round of 2013 in XNUMX.
