Hurkacz had to give up against the Frenchman Arthur Fils at 6:7, 4:6, 6:2 and 6:6 (8:9). In the tiebreak of the fourth set, the Pole made a wrong step and injured his knee. Afterwards, the limping Hurkacz, who tried to continue playing after several minutes of treatment, could hardly perform any more, thus allowing Fils to win.
Fils was only one point away from victory anyway. In addition, the injured Hurkacz would never have been able to play another set. Fils played excellently. The 20-year-old Frenchman impressed with his aggressive play and won the first two sets. Fils also kept up with Hurkacz in the fourth round. The world number 34 seems to be able to go far in this tournament with such performances.

For Hurkacz, the elimination is of course doubly bitter. The 28-year-old is considered a real grass court specialist and was recently in the final in Halle, where he lost to his good friend Jannik Sinner. The world number 7 was considered one of the favorites to win Wimbledon due to his strong form, had he not already been in the semi-finals three years ago. It remains to be hoped that serve expert Hurkacz did not suffer a serious injury on Thursday.
