Final dream shattered: Sinner's Wimbledon miracle doesn't happen

From a South Tyrolean perspective it was probably the sporting event of the year, and for Jannik Sinner the most important match of his young career. First semi-final at Wimbledon, the most important tennis tournament in the world. Against an opponent who is considered one of the greatest athletes in history. Even before the game started, it was clear that the 21-year-old from Puster would need a Herculean performance against Novak Djokovic, who is 15 years older, in order to reach the final. But in the end it wasn't to be: The Serbian serial winner prevailed in three sets with 3:6, 4:6, 6:7 (4) and is heading straight for his 24th Grand Slam title.

Sinner didn't play badly, on the contrary: at times he delighted the packed stands on the Center Court of the All England Club with spectacular shots and often showed what quality his 1,88 meter tall man has. But in such a big match, the details are crucial. And here the experienced “Djoker” – who has an impressive 46 Grand Slam semi-finals under his belt – was simply more calm. While the grandmaster from Serbia hardly allowed himself a mistake and was a wall, especially with the big points, semi-final newcomer Sinner showed nerves too often in the crucial moments. For example, the six break chances, all of which he missed, or the two set points in the third section.

In the end, Djokovic needed 2.46 hours to make it to the final. There he will fight either Carlos Alcaraz or Daniil Medvedev on Sunday for his fifth Wimbledon title in a row and eighth overall. The game started promisingly for Sinner. In the first game, the world number 8 had two break chances, which Djokovic fended off. Immediately afterwards, the favorite did better: at the first opportunity he took the service from Sinner and went ahead 3-0. The South Tyrolean couldn't do much, also because the forehand didn't work as desired. The first set went to “Djoker”.

Djokovic's incredible statistics It was already clear then: Now it would be a very difficult undertaking for Sinner, simply because of Djokovic's impressive statistics. If the Serb won the first set at a Grand Slam tournament, he won the match in 98 percent of the cases. Expressed in absolute numbers: 302 wins, five defeats. In the second section, the third game turned out to be a sticking point, in which Djokovic used his third break chance and was never really in danger of losing this set.

The third round was completely different, in which Sinner initially showed great morale (he made up a 0:40 deficit on his own service) and then even played better than his opponent. The Sexten player had two set points, but missed them and ultimately had to admit defeat in the tie break.

Nevertheless: a milestone in your career Sinner was denied the big coup, i.e. reaching his first Grand Slam final. Nevertheless, the young star from Sesto can look back proudly on the past two weeks. For the first time he reached the semi-finals of a major tournament, which is a milestone in his young career. And: Losing to Novak Djokovic in top form is no shame!
