Final in Toronto: Sinner reaches for his biggest title!

Jannik Sinner has won seven tournaments in his career, but he has never achieved a triumph in a Masters 1000 tournament. To give you a better idea: After the Grand Slams and the ATP Finals, the Masters tournaments are among the most important competitions in the tennis circuit. Now the man from Sexten has a great chance to grab his first title at this level: On Sunday night, Sinner defeated the frightened favorite Tommy Paul 6:4, 6:4 in the semi-finals in Toronto and thus moved into the final.

Alex De Minaur will be waiting there on Sunday evening from 22 p.m. (CEST). The Australian is in 18th place in the world rankings and will contest his first Masters 1000 final - in contrast to Sinner, who has already been to a final of this type twice, both times in Miami. Curious: Sinner and De Minaur played the doubles together in Toronto, now they are fighting against each other for the title.

In the semi-finals on Saturday, Sinner proved that he is ready for the big final. With Tommy Paul he had to play against the player who had eliminated world number one Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals. The US boy, ranked 14th in the world, is in the form of his life, which he showed again and again against Sinner. But in the end, the world number 8 prevailed in 1.56 hours. The key to success? Sinner returned extremely strong, kept the rhythm high, used the majority of his break chances and scored the points in many tricky moments. The 21-year-old was also able to cope with the fact that his serve didn't work ideally that day.

Highlight: A rally over 46 strokes The match didn't start as expected for Sinner because he immediately conceded the break, but with the immediate rebreak he quickly set the pointers back to zero. Both players had problems with the service, but when Sinner's first serve landed in the field, he scored the point in three out of four cases. He was also the cooler player on the center court during the longer rallies. After another break and rebreak, Sinner took his opponent's serve for the third time at 5:4 and grabbed the first set.

In the second section, Sinner quickly moved ahead to 4:1 with a break. His counterpart Paul hung on the ropes like a wounded boxer, also because he didn't seem to be completely physically fit and had to be treated on his back by the physiotherapist for five minutes. But suddenly the US boy found his way back into the game, which now became really spectacular. The highlight was a rally that lasted a whopping 46 strokes and left the spectators out of their seats. Paul made Sinner sweat again and took his serve to make it 4:5. But in direct return, the Sesto native took advantage of the American's mistakes, earned three break and match points and closed the bag after 1.56 hours.
