Jannik Sinner: By express train through New York

This Jannik Sinner is a feast for the eyes: The world number 1 reached the quarterfinals of the US Open early Tuesday morning (CEST).

What wasn't there a lot of whispering before this year's US Open? Because of the doping scandal beforehand, Sinner wasn't exactly given the best chances of getting far in New York. But the Sextner returned to form in the second week of the tournament at the latest. In the round of 14, Sinner defeated local hero Tommy Paul (ATP 7) in three sets with 6:3(7), 6:5(6) and 1:XNUMX.

Paul, who was even leading by two breaks in the first set, actually didn't play badly. But in the decisive moments, Sinner was simply a class better. In the tiebreak of the second set, the American was leading by a mini-break (5:4), but when Sinner won the extra time again at the end, the decision was made. In the third set, Paul could no longer pull himself together and Sinner easily moved into the quarterfinals after 2 hours 48 minutes.

The match between Sinner and Paul was at a high level for a long time. There were spectacular rallies, especially in the second tiebreak. In front of his influencer girlfriend Paige Lorenze Paul played good tennis for long stretches. But there is currently no way to beat Sinner. The 23-year-old has only lost one set in Flushing Meadows so far - the opening set against Mackenzie McDonald. Since then, Sinner has been racing through New York like a bullet train.

Now against Medvedev

In the quarterfinals, Sinner will face a real opponent: none other than Daniil Medvedev will stand in the South Tyrolean's way. The Russian is - just like Sinner - a proven hard court specialist. Medvedev is currently number 5 in the world. The 28-year-old won his only Grand Slam title three years ago at the US Open. Medvedev was also in the finals in New York two more times. In the direct duel between the two, Sinner is currently trailing 5:7.
