No final: A young Dane stops Sinner's Sofia run

Jannik Sinner and Sofia: It has been a true love affair so far. The Sesto native had a track record of 11-0 wins and won two of his six tournament victories at ATP level in the Bulgarian capital. However, this series ended on Saturday: against world number 31. Holger Rune from Denmark lost Sinner in three sets 7:5, 4:6 and 2:5. Rune didn't have to play the final service game in the third round because Sinner didn't want to risk anything anymore due to a recently injured ankle and finally gave up.

The 19-year-old Rune, who is one of the top talents in the tennis circus, will now face the Swiss Marc-Andrea Hüsler (ATP 95) in the final, who had previously surprisingly defeated the Italian Lorenzo Musetti (ATP 30) after two rounds . So the dream final between the two youngsters from Italy, Sinner and Musetti, came to nothing.

Sinner won the first set against Rune. He seemed more confident in his serve games than the Dane, but he initially didn't manage a break. Sinner only struck when the score was 6:5. The 21-year-old took the serve game from his opponent, who was two years his junior and against whom he had never played before, and prevailed 7:5.

The turnaround in this match came in the second round when the score was 2:2. Sinner blacked out and didn't score a point on his own serve. Finally, the strong Rune won the second set 6:4. Sinner injures his ankle In the third round, Sinner had to give up his first serve game. When the score was 2:3, the South Tyrolean had an unfortunate twist during a rally and injured his right ankle. After a medical timeout, Sinner was initially able to continue playing. The ailing defending champion was unable to counter the strong Rune and had to give up after 2:30 hours.

It remains to be hoped that Sinner was not seriously injured. After all, the Pusterer has to collect important points in the next few weeks if he wants to qualify for the ATP finals in Turin (November 14th to 21st).
