Semifinals! Now Sinner dreams of a big coup

Sinner defeated Frenchman Gaël Monfils 6:4, 4:6 and 6:3 in the quarterfinals early on Saturday morning (CEST). Sinner is now in the final four at the Masters in Canada after just two wins. As is well known, the South Tyrolean received a bye at the start. Because Andy Murray was unable to compete in the round of XNUMX due to injury, Sinner has only had to play against Matteo Berrettini and Monfils so far.

However, the task against Monfils was anything but easy. The former number 6 in the world has played well in Toronto so far and he also continued there against Sinner. In the first set, Sinner didn't have a chance to break for a long time before Monfils began to tremble in his last service game. The Pusterer didn't miss this opportunity and won the first round.

In the second set, Sinner took the lead 3-1. At this point it looked as if the world number 8 could soon close the bag. But things turned out differently: Monfils managed the re-break straight away. The man from Paris then played himself into a flow. Monfils now rewarded himself for his game and took the serve game away from Sinner once again when the score was 4:4. The crowd favorite then served confidently to win the set and received a standing ovation.

Sinner came back in the third set. Monfils seemed increasingly a little tired - also because he was playing the fourth match in a row in Toronto. Sinner Monfils, who is currently number 207 in the live ranking, took the second serve game. Afterwards, the 36-year-old, who had to fight various injury problems during his career, was no longer able to fight back. After just under 2:20 hours, Sinner moved into his fourth Masters semi-final this year.

Because of Alcaraz Sinner's chance of winning his first Masters title has rarely been as great as it is now in Toronto. In the semi-finals, the South Tyrolean will not meet Carlos Alcaraz as expected, but rather Tommy Paul (ATP 14). The 26-year-old American surprisingly beat the Spaniard in three sets.

But be careful: Whoever beats the number 1 in the world is by no means the clear outsider in a semi-final against Sinner (on Sunday night/CEST). In the other semi-final, the Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (ATP 37) and the Australian Alex De Minaur (ATP 18) meet.
