Sinner against Medvedev: Duel of the last top players

This match has become almost a classic: Jannik Sinner against Daniil Medvedev. This year alone, the two world-class tennis players are facing each other in the quarterfinals of the US Open for the fourth time.

12 games, 7:5 wins for Daniil Medvedev. These are the dry statistics of the duel between the Russian and Jannik Sinner. But the showdown between Medvedev and the South Tyrolean is much more than that. They have already faced each other 3 times this year. Next night at 2.30:4 a.m. (CEST) the tennis giants will meet for the XNUMXth time.

The year began with the final of the Australian Open. Sinner beat Medvedev in a thrilling final and secured the first Grand Slam title of his career. A few months later, at the Masters tournament in Miami, the Sextner repeated his victory over Medvedev - this time quite clearly with 6:1, 6:2. But the Muscovite hit back. In the quarterfinals of the prestigious Wimbledon tournament, he prevailed in 5 sets. Sinner has thus won both duels on hard court, while Medvedev won on the sacred English grass. Does this mean that the court in New York is an advantage for the South Tyrolean?

Favorites dying: Greater chance of the title?

In general, the statistics speak in Sinner's favor. The South Tyrolean has won 7 of the last 6 duels. But Sinner will hardly rest on his laurels, because a world-class player like the 28-year-old Russian can beat any opponent on a good day.

Medvedev is currently number 5 in the ATP rankings. But because numerous favorites, including Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz, have already been eliminated in New York, the remaining top players have a greater chance of winning the tournament than usual. Of the top 8 professionals, only Sinner and Medvedev are still in the competition. With Alexander Zverev (ATP 4), another title contender had to throw in the towel last night.
