Sinner fights his way into the semi-finals

The name Duckworth evokes mixed feelings for Sinner. On the one hand, the 20-year-old only left the Australian with three games at the ATP 250 tournament in Cologne last year, and on the other hand, Sinner suffered a bitter two-set defeat at the Masters in Toronto less than two months ago. On Friday he was able to take revenge and won 7:6 and 6:4 after a tough fight. Although he quickly ironed this out, Duckworth managed another break at 3:2 and ran away to 5:2. The South Tyrolean seemed lethargic, not nearly as lively and reactive as he was in the round of XNUMX. His opponent, on the other hand, was convincing in all respects: he consistently attacked the youngster's second serves, played strong defensively and also served well. All of this meant that Sinner was constantly under pressure and was never able to develop his best tennis. But he fought - and got the second break back, also thanks to the active help of Duckworth. Emotions are running high The turn? No, because when the score was 5:6, Sinner had to fend off a set point. Thanks to strong first serves, he saved himself in the tiebreak, that of the world number 14. then won 7:4. Completely frustrated, Duckworth argued with the chair umpire, who had overruled two balls in Sinner's favor. And he couldn't believe that he had lost a 62-minute set in which he was actually the better player. The intensity that characterized Sinner's game towards the end of the first set was lost at the beginning of the second section. Duckworth punished this, got the break right at the start - and even had the chance for the double break a few minutes later. Instead of using this, he witnessed the next Sinner comeback: He converted a 2:4 deficit into a 5:4 lead and forced Duckworth to serve against the loss of the game. The Australian couldn't cope with this pressure, and Sinner also played two cracking forehand winners - and so the 20-year-old made it to the semi-finals despite a lot of effort.
