Sinner welcomed like a pop star: “No high expectations”

Jannik Sinner's fans had been eagerly awaiting this moment for three months, and on Monday evening, it finally happened. The 23-year-old hit his first balls in public ahead of the Masters 1000 tournament in Rome. The reception the Tifosi gave the world number one resembled that of a pop star.

Even before Jannik Sinner stepped onto Center Court in the Eternal City at 19 p.m., the Sexten native had a press conference scheduled. "The hardest moment of the lockdown was the beginning," Sinner explained. "I couldn't attend any sporting events. I couldn't go to the stadium to watch a football match or watch my friends' cycling races." At least the break gave him the opportunity to spend more time with his family.

During his suspension, Sinner didn't follow tennis much. Only since last week has he started watching the odd match again. He said he hasn't had much contact with his rivals in the meantime. "Tennis is an individual sport. Everyone has to do their own thing. I've spoken a bit with Jack Draper, Lorenzo Sonego, and a few others. I was pleasantly surprised by the messages from some players. From some others, however, I was expecting a message, but it didn't come. But everything will become clear over time," explained the No. 1.

Sinner reveals interesting details

Sinner doesn't have high expectations for Rome. "Now I'm very happy to be back, and I'm excited to see what level I'll be at. I've been away for so long, so I don't know how I'll play. I'm not here to beat everyone. My big goal is the French Open in Paris. I'll try to get past the first round and then take it day by day."

Sinner's team is very relaxed because he feels very good mentally and physically. "The break will certainly be helpful to me at the end of the season," Sinner concluded.

After the media marathon was over, the South Tyrolean went to the training ground, where thousands of fans were waiting for their favorite. On the other side of the net was Czech Jiri Lehecka (ATP 38). Sinner seemed relaxed and ready for his comeback. It has now been confirmed that South Tyrol's Sportsman of the Year will play his opening match against Mariano Navone or Federico Cinà will deny.
