US Open: Italy triumphs in mixed doubles

An Italian mixed doubles team has never won a Grand Slam tournament. Since late Thursday evening (CEST), this chapter can also be closed. Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori won the title in New York.

Errani and Vavassori were overjoyed after the decisive point was won. The two Azzurri won the mixed doubles title at the 2024 US Open. The two are the first Italian mixed doubles team to triumph at a Grand Slam.

In the final, Errani/Vavassori faced the American duo Taylor Townsend and Donald Young. The local heroes held their own, but lost the first set by a narrow margin of 7:6 (0). The second set was also exciting, but once again the Azzurri had the better end (7:5). For Errani, this is the 6th Grand Slam title, after she has already triumphed in the classic doubles 5 times.
