After Olympic debut: Ski ace ends his career.

A surprising retirement from skiing at the age of 28

A Canadian ski racer has announced his retirement at the age of 28 – after his most successful season ever.

A surprise for many of his skiing colleagues: the end of his career at just 28 years old and after a solid season – in the middle of a career at a good level, in which he had gained his first experiences at major events in the last two years: Riley Seger has announced his retirement.

The Canadian speed specialist ends his career with 49 World Cup starts. He made his debut in Sölden in 2019 and achieved four top-15 finishes – all in the Super-G, which has always been his preferred discipline. His last top-15 finish came in December in Val Gardena; his best result remains 10th place in Aspen in 2023. His World Cup career ended in late January in Kitzbühel (where he still scored points). Seger made his Olympic debut in Bormio but did not finish the Super-G.

A year earlier, he had made his debut at the 2025 World Championships in Saalbach, finishing 20th in the Super-G. He celebrated his farewell at the recent national championships in Panorama (5th place in the Super-G) before revealing that these races would be his last. In total, Seger scored World Cup points four times in his final season – more than ever before.

"A few beers on the terrace"

"The season is over and it's time to say goodbye. It has been an honor to represent Canada on the international stage," Riley wrote on social media. "I feel ready to begin the next chapter of my life, and at the same time incredibly lucky to have shared the highs and lows of the sport with a team that I consider family."

“The unknown is certainly frightening, but I’m looking forward to seeing what the future holds. Now it’s time to enjoy some spring skiing and… a few beers on the terrace,” Seger concluded.
