European Cup: A Frenchman leads in Obereggen

The first round of the prestigious European Cup slalom took place in Obereggen this Tuesday morning. Defending champion Steven Amiez leads impressively. But the Azzurri around Simon Mauerberger can still dream of a podium.

French defending champion Steven Amiez leads after the first round of the European Cup slalom in Obereggen. With start number 25, the 7-year-old conjured up an almost perfect run on the Maierl piste, especially in the lower section. Two Scandinavian talents landed behind him, namely the 20-year-old Norwegian Hans Grahl-Madsen (61 hundredths of a second behind) and the 22-year-old Finn Jesper Pohjolainen (73 hundredths of a second behind).

The Azzurri, who have often experienced bitter disappointments in Obereggen, can still hope for their first podium finish since ex-Olympic champion Giuliano Razzoli's second place in 2018: reigning slalom junior world champion Corrado Barbera finished 1,20 seconds behind 5th place, Ahrntaler Simon Maurberger, 1,40 seconds behind in 7th place.

The second round begins at 13 p.m. Obereggen is celebrating its 40th anniversary as a European Cup organizer this year, making it the most traditional European Cup destination in the ski circuit.
