Since February 2005, the second highest racing series in skiing has been held almost continuously in the Sarntal. This year, almost 90 racers from 15 different nations have registered for the traditional South Tyrolean European Cup destination. The best-known name is probably that of Breezy Johnson: The American won gold in the downhill and in the team combination at the World Championships in Saalbach alongside Mikaela Shiffrin. Whether the 29-year-old will actually start will be known on Tuesday at the latest after the first team captains' meeting and the drawing of the start list.
Preparations for the 19th Sarntal European Cup are almost complete. "After the recent snowfall and the cold temperatures, we have almost perfect conditions in Reinswald. After two decades, we also have a wealth of experience in running races like the European Cup smoothly. We are looking forward to the racers, for whom we naturally want to offer the best possible conditions on and off the piste. If Breezy Johnson actually starts, then that would of course be a wonderful thing for the entire organizing committee and for skiing in South Tyrol," says Luis Hofer, coordinator of the Sarntal European Cup races.
When the Vice President of the Regional Government Helps Out as a Ski Slope Man
But it is not just the female racers who are famous. Franz Locher, the former mayor and current vice president of the regional government of Trentino-South Tyrol, is on duty as a piste slider. Locher's colleague, regional assessor Angelo Gennaccaro, is also supporting the races."I would like to congratulate the organisers and all those who make this great event possible. Hosting the Women's Alpine Skiing European Cup is an extraordinary opportunity to enhance our region and demonstrate once again that we are able to host high-level events. The Sarentino Valley, with its wonderful slopes, confirms its close link with skiing and these races are a unique opportunity to give the valley prestige, to make its beauty and hospitality known internationally, but above all to celebrate the passion for sport and its role as a driver of growth and social cohesion," underlines Gennaccaro, assessor for European integration, humanitarian aid and activities of particular regional interest.
start time at 10 am
As in previous years, there will be a Super-G on both Wednesday, February 19th and Thursday, February 20th. The start time on both race days has been set at 10 a.m. The defending champion is the "Azzurra" Asja Zenere. The 28-year-old from Enego has established herself in the World Cup this season and will compete in the home World Cup in Sestriere. The Italian national team is the women's team with the most participants, with 25 registered athletes. The most successful team is Austria, which won 22 of a total of 57 European Cup races in Reinswald. They are followed by France (8), as well as Switzerland and host country Italy, each with seven wins.European Cup Ski Alpine Reinswald/Sarntal – Program:
