Goggia's way back: A physical and mental feat

After her serious injury in February, Sofia Goggia is focused on getting back in top shape for the coming winter. In addition to the physical exertion, the top athlete also mentions the mental side of returning.

Sofia Goggia had an outstanding run in the downhill last season, winning her fifth discipline championship. She also played an important role in the overall World Cup. But at the beginning of February, shocking news reached the ski circus: The Italian speed queen broke the tibial plateau of her right leg in several places during training. This injury abruptly ended the 31-year-old's season and initiated a long recovery period.

Now the Azzurra spoke about her recovery before she is expected to return to the slopes in a few weeks: “The goal is always to ski as well as possible, that is my job and my passion. But we have to wait and see whether or not this injury leaves mental repercussions in addition to the physical side, which I treat well. I think that's always the difficulty that comes with all injuries. I have to concentrate on getting back on my feet 100 percent. The season is still a long way off, but I know I’m on the right track.”

A Sofia Goggia in top shape is undoubtedly an asset to skiing, as it always ensures spectacular and exciting races. However, it will take some time to see how much confidence Goggia has regained. Her first stage goal is probably the season opener in the giant slalom in Sölden on October 26th, where she can prove her form to her fans and herself. The speed start on the “Birds of Prey” from Beaver Creek (USA) awaits on December 14th (Downhill) and 15th (Super G). At the latest there, if Goggia finds her form again, she should be able to be counted among the favorites again.
