Unbelievable: Federica Brignone crashes the Gut party

There was a giant slalom in Åre on Saturday. The exceptional Swiss skier Lara Gut-Behrami had a great chance to be crowned giant slalom queen early on. But one “Azzurra” had something against it with an incredible performance: Federica Brignone.

While the conditions in the first run were still foggy and snowy, the sun broke through the clouds just in time for the start of the second run. In wonderful weather, the leader of the first round, Sarah Hector, not only gave away the victory, but also showed a brilliant run by an unleashed Federica Brignone and was at the top in the end. Second place went to Hector, while the Swiss Lara Gut-Behrami finished third.

The latter will probably be the most annoyed, as she could have been crowned giant slalom queen on Saturday. She showed a good second run, but it wasn't enough in the end. On the one hand, because Brignone produced a performance that was out of this world, and on the other hand, because the gap to Sarah Hector after the first round (1 seconds) was too big. By the way: For Brignone it was the 0,61th World Cup victory of her career.

The decision will be made at the season finale

So that now means that the decision about the small giant slalom ball will only be made at the season finale in Saalbach (AUT) next weekend. The current leader, Lara Gut-Behrami, currently has a comfortable 95 point lead over Federica Brignone. It's a little unlikely that Brignone will overtake Gut-Behrami, but: never say never!

A South Tyrolean also took part in the giant slalom in Åre: Elisa Platino. The Merano woman, who was still in 25th place after the first run, showed some insecurities in the second run and ended the giant slalom in 29th place.

Tomorrow a slalom – and a star comeback

On Sunday the technology weekend in Åre will be rounded off with a slalom. The anticipation among ski fans is so great because Mikaela Shiffrin, probably the best skier of all time, will make their long-awaited comeback. She injured her medial ligament in her knee in Cortina d'Ampezzo on January 26th, but is now ready to attack again.

The first run starts at 10.30:30 a.m., the second with the best 13.30 runners starts at XNUMX:XNUMX p.m. In the SportNews-Live ticker so you don't miss anything.
