Sarntal is looking forward to the European Cup

The women's European Cup returns to the Sarntal in February. The speed specialists will be in action again this winter on the Schöneben piste in Reiniswald. On Wednesday, 19 and Thursday, 20 February, two Super-Gs will be held in the Sarntal ski area as part of the traditional European Cup.

20 years have passed since Sarner's European Cup debut at the beginning of February 2005. At that time, Austrian Christine Spornring won the downhill (2.2.2005), while her national team colleague Selina Heregger had the upper hand in the Super-G the next day. In the meantime, Reinswald has reached the 19th edition of one of the most traditional European Cup stages. This year, two Super-Gs will be held on the Schöneben piste to fight for the day's victory and important points for the overall ranking. The start time for both races has been set for 10 a.m.

The last winner in Reinswald was an "Azzurra" last year. Asja Zenere won the first Super-G, while the second race had to be cancelled due to weather conditions. The fourth European Cup victory of the athlete from the Carabinieri sports group was a first in two respects. Firstly, it was Zenere's first European Cup victory in the Super-G. Secondly, it was the first triumph of an Italian racer in the Sarntal, which also ended a winning streak of eight successes (out of eight Super-Gs held) by the Austrian national team. Ski fans from near and far will have to wait just over a month to find out who will win this winter.

Preparations are in full swing

The organizers are currently in the middle of preparations for the big South Tyrolean Ski Festival, so that the racers will find the usual optimal conditions on and off the race track at the 19th edition of the European Cup. The team led by coordinator Luis Hofer has been able to gain a lot of experience over the past 20 years. In 2005 and 2006, the women competed in the European Cup races in the Sarntal. From 2007 to 2014 and after a one-year break in 2016, the men of the second highest racing series in alpine skiing competed in the Sarntal ski area.

In February 2017, the European Cup final in the fast disciplines for men and women was even organized in Reinswald. After that, the men were guests again, before the women will be in action again on the perfectly prepared Sarntal slopes in 2020 and from 2022 onwards. "We really appreciate the trust of the International Ski and Snowboard Federation FIS. These races are very important for our valley. If only because of the numerous overnight stays that we usually generate in a tourist off-season. We would also like to thank our many sponsors and partners, as well as the many volunteers who make it possible for us to host the European Cup in the first place. And of course, thanks also go to the Reinswald cable cars, who, with their employees, prepare really perfect slopes," explain the organizers, who invite all ski enthusiasts to the women's European Cup races in the Sarntal on February 19 and 20.
