A sensation is on the horizon: Sala in Adelboden is on course for a podium finish

Joy and sorrow are close together in the Italian slalom team: Alex Vinatzer was eliminated from the first round in Adelboden, while his teammate Tommaso Sala is getting a taste of his first World Cup podium.

The slalom in Adelboden always offers a spectacle. That day was no different. Although dense fog once again affected the race at Cheunisbärgli, racing at its finest was on offer. After the first round there are three athletes in the lead who were not included in the list for various reasons: Alexander Steen Olsen, Atle Lie McGrath and Tommaso Sala. The decision promises a lot of excitement.

Slalom is the most unpredictable discipline in the Ski World Cup. There is no clear favorite in any race; surprises can be expected at any time. One such person is Tommaso Sala. The Italian landed in the first two slaloms of the season Injured his knee during preparation and was therefore behind in training, beyond the top 30. In Adelboden, the 28-year-old showed why he finished in the top 10 three times last year. With an incredibly cheeky line, a lot of courage and tactical cleverness, Sala set the interim best time. The Italian was particularly strong on the finish slope.

Norway duo outstanding

The Norwegians Alexander Steen Olsen and Atle Lie McGrath were even more aggressive and risk-taking. The latter took second place in last year's Adelboden Slalom and is extremely dangerous this year too. Steen Olsen intercepted his teammate, who was one year older than him, and is now on the verge of the greatest success of his career. But be careful: a total of twelve athletes are within one second. The race for the podium is therefore more open than ever.

Alex Vinatzer is still looking for his slalom form. The 24-year-old, who had finished a strong 11th in the giant slalom the day before, got on the skis in the middle section, lost control and was eliminated. Tobias Kastlunger qualified for the second round in Adelboden for the first time in 25th place.
