Skiing chapter comes to an end: South Tyrolean ends career

South Tyrolean ski racer Simon Maurberger is saying goodbye to top-level sport. The Ahrntal native is ending his career at the age of 31, thus opening a new chapter in his life.

Simon Maurberger has ended his career. The South Tyrolean from St. Peter in the Ahrntal valley is thus drawing a line under his career as a ski racer. In an emotional Instagram post on Friday afternoon, the technical specialist wrote that it was time "to close a chapter that has shaped my entire life."

Maurberger has competed in 114 World Cup races during his career. He scored his first points in the premier skiing discipline in the 2015 giant slalom in Val-d'Isère, and finished in the top ten five times in a World Cup race. The technical specialist achieved his best result in 2020 in Schladming, where he finished fifth.

World Championship medal as a highlight

Maurberger experienced his career highlight at the 2019 World Ski Championships in Åre, Sweden, where he won bronze with Italy in the team event. In the Europa Cup, the second-highest racing series, "Maubi" celebrated six victories.

In his farewell message, Maurberger not only looked back on the highlights, but also on the difficult moments. There had been victories "that felt like flying," but also defeats that hurt more than words could ever express.

In closing, the South Tyrolean thanked his fans, teammates, support staff, and especially his family and friends for their years of support. "Simon out," Maurberger wrote at the end of his post.
