Zermatt-Cervinia: Suddenly the Italian Alliod is in the top field

A year late (there wasn't enough snow last year), downhill training will take place between Zermatt and Cervinia. It's supposed to be on Saturday controversial “Matterhorn descent” celebrate their World Cup debut – provided the weather cooperates. Training took place on the Gran Becca for the first time on Wednesday. The Austrian grabbed the best training time Otmar Striedinger . The man of the day was Azzurro Benjamin Alliod.

Striedinger showed, especially in the middle section, how one could show off on the new World Cup downhill. There the Carinthian was the measure of all things. However, the significance of the first training session is limited because Striedinger also did not complete all of the goals correctly. Several top athletes used the practice run to get to know the route better. For example, drove Vincent Kriechmayr at a leisurely pace over the Gran Becca, missed goals and didn't even try to go to the limit. But athletes who are hardly the focus of the races came far ahead. But everyone stole the show Benjamin Alliod . The 23-year-old from Aosta was only promoted to the World Cup group in the summer. So far, Alliod has only competed in the European Cup, where a 5th place in the downhill race in Sella Nevea in January 2023 is his best result. Now he finished 1nd (+2) in the first training session on the Gran Becca.

That's how it went for the South Tyroleans From the South Tyroleans Florian Schieder the best (4th/+0,85). The Castelrotto native took the training seriously and was particularly impressive in the last part of the route. Niels Hintermann ended up between Schieder and Striedinger (SUI/+0,37). With Mattia Casse (6th), another Azzurro landed in the top ten. The Ultner dominik paris finished training in 22nd place. Christoph Innerhofer (68th), however, lost 4,20 seconds to Striedinger and is therefore the worst-placed Azzurro.

There are two more training sessions on the program on Thursday and Friday before the race weekend begins with two downhill runs. Always provided that the weather doesn't put a damper on the mega event between Zermatt and Cervinia.
