Angry Brignone: “What annoys me most…”

The Victory party at the foot of the magnificent Erta was already in full swing, Then the eliminated Federica Brignone arrived at the finish. On tiptoe and with her head bowed, she left the South Tyrolean slope that had caused her a lot of grief that day. After the first run of the Kronplatz giant slalom, the serial winner from Aosta was still in the lead and thus went into the decision as the big favorite. But after just a few seconds of skiing, her skis got messed up, she missed a gate and had to bury her dream of victory. The murmuring in the well-filled stands was louder than ever before that day.

Brignone has won 31 races in her career and has made it onto the podium 75 times. Nevertheless, it seemed as if the 34-year-old was devastated after this missed opportunity. "Fede" had to be cheered up at the finish, primarily by star guest Manuela Mölgg, who praised her former teammate.

In the subsequent interview with the press, Brignone explained what exactly was bothering her. "What annoys me most is that I've had a zero in the giant slalom for the third time this season," said the superstar. This means that Brignone was eliminated in three out of five races - something that rarely happens to her in this discipline. “Our sport can be cruel.” Federico Brignone "What makes me angry is that it's always tiny mistakes that cost me the race. That shows how cruel our sport can be. Even when I'm doing great, something like that can always happen. Being eliminated in three out of five races is tough. Before the World Championships, you ask yourself a lot of questions," Brignone says harshly. The giant slalom at Kronplatz was the last before the World Championships in Saalbach, which begin on February 4. Brignone will be competing there as the reigning vice world champion in the RTL.

Motto before the World Cup: Lockdown How is she preparing for the title fights? "I don't want to see or hear anyone before the World Championships," says Brignone with a laugh. "No, seriously. I'll be spending a lot of days at home. That's my atmosphere, it's quiet there, there's no hustle and bustle, I feel comfortable there." By the way: If Brignone hasn't been eliminated in the giant slalom this year, then she has won the race. She was at the top in both Sölden and Semmering. That alone shows that she is one of the top favorites at the World Championships in Saalbach - regardless of her failures.
