Emotional scene: Shiffrin cries in Kilde's arms

It was a highly emotional World Cup final for the women. In the end, Mikaela Shiffrin won her sixth overall World Cup title – and was in tears afterwards.

Mikaela Shiffrin has done it again! The American has secured her sixth title. The overall World Cup winner will receive the large crystal globe on Wednesday. The Olympic slalom champion had to tremble until the very last run, because the German Emma Aicher was hot on the heels of the 110-time World Cup winner.

But when Shiffrin's top-15 finish in the final giant slalom in Lillehammer was finally secured and the mathematical certainty was achieved, the ski queen was overcome by her emotions. At the finish line, she stared in disbelief at the screen, asking repeatedly: "Is it official now? Is it official now?"

Shiffrin tears

Standing beside the American girl were her mother Eileen, her manager Kilian Albrecht, and last but not least, her fiancé Aleksander Aamodt Kilde. When Shiffrin finally realized that she had done it again, she burst into tears in Kilde's arms.

But it wasn't long before the tears of joy turned into broad grins. Shiffrin made history on Wednesday, as only one other athlete had previously achieved six overall World Cup victories. Austria's Sportswoman of the Century, Annemarie Moser-Pröll, had also once won half a dozen crystal globes. Now Shiffrin has equaled her record.
