Julian Schütter is a member of the “Last Generation”. A few weeks ago he was skiing on World Cup ski slopes.

From the Ski World Cup to the “Last Generation”

After the end of his career, the former junior vice world champion Julian Schütter had more free time. He is now a regular member of the “Last Generation” climate protests.

Julian Schütter was once a rising star in Austrian ski racing. In 2019, Schütter, who comes from Styria, even won silver in the downhill at the Junior World Ski Championships in Fassa Valley. In mid-February he announced his early retirement. However, the reason for this is not his activism. Sport no longer fulfills him as it once did, he said at the time. He also suffered from disc problems and a long list of injuries.

The student shared a picture with other protest supporters on social media six weeks ago and wrote: “I would like to grow old. But our democratically elected government is clearly leading us to collective suicide. Because I cannot stand idly by and because I firmly believe in democracy, I sat yesterday with the Last Generation AT in front of Parliament, the heart of our democracy, to unignorably demand my right to survival.” A desire that is currently close to the hearts of many young people.

New protest action

Now the young activist shared another picture of the protest. This time numerous people in orange vests gathered in front of the MuseumsQuartier in Vienna. Their demand is clear and clear: the right to survival. One participant wears a sign around his neck that reads “I wish I didn’t have to do this!” A sign of the inner conflict of the protesters.

It is not clear whether Schütter is more than just a “simple” member of the movement. In any case, he is an important voice in drawing attention to the issue. The colloquial term “climate glue” does not apply to Schütter, because the last generation has not been sticking since January.
