Manuela Mölgg: “As an athlete, I was never injured – and now this”

Manuela Mölgg is one of the most successful ski racers in the history of South Tyrol. The woman from Enneberg was never injured in her career, but now she has suffered a serious blow in her retirement from skiing.

Manuela Mölgg hasn't lost her sense of humor. “It seems as if I had saved all the injuries for after my career,” says the 40-year-old from Val Badia. What she means by that: The ski mom had to undergo two shoulder operations within a few months.

“It is the shoulder that I have fallen on again and again throughout my career. After my career I was always in pain and then in August the mishap happened. When I held my little son in my arm, the tendon tore," explains Mölgg, adding: "An operation followed, but it didn't go well. A recent scan showed the tendon had ruptured again, so I underwent another operation ten days ago.”

Now it's time for Mölgg to take a break; she can hardly put any strain on her shoulder for at least a month. “It's a bit strange because I've never had any serious injuries during my career. I had to take a break here and there because of back problems, but otherwise I got through it well. And now this is happening.”

Happy with the new life

The skis that she still likes to take out in winter have to stay in the basement a little longer this time. It's lucky that Manuela Mölgg has enough to do at home in her residence. And then there is her little Ben, who always keeps her on her toes. “I actually only missed professional skiing in the year after I retired, and I especially missed traveling. Today I enjoy life at home with the little one, my family and the hotel.”

Manuela Mölgg has left her mark on the South Tyrolean ski scene. In her 283 World Cup races she finished on the podium 14 times. Today, the woman from Enneberg is still the last South Tyrolean to finish in the top 2017 of the World Cup in the giant slalom (2011 in Courchevel) and the slalom (3 in Zagreb). “Manu” has been retired from skiing since March 2018.
