The men around Marco Odermatt and Franjo van Almen had set the pace in the first week of the World Championships, and since then the skiing nation of Switzerland has been showered with medals in abundance. The new slalom world champion Camille Rast and the runner-up Wendy Holdener won medals number eleven and twelve for the Swiss on Saturday.

World Cup leader Rast had a fabulous time in the first run, which she defended brilliantly in the final round, securing Switzerland's first women's slalom world championship title in 34 years. The 25-year-old from Valais's most dangerous competitor was her teammate Holdener, who took silver, 46 hundredths behind.

In the sunny finish area, however, the almost 17.000 fans from Austria who were rooting for Katharina Liensberger were also beaming. The Vorarlberg native, 2021 Slalom World Champion in Cortina, caused exuberant cheers in the stands with her bronze run. She was two hundredths faster than fourth-placed American Paula Moltzan.

No new Shiffrin record

The final slalom was the second and last appearance of ski superstar Mikaela Shiffrin in Saalbach - and it ended in disappointment. In fifth place, she missed the podium and thus her 16th World Championship medal, which would have set a new record. Zrinka Ljutic, who is also one of the top favorites, came in ninth.

Rossetti long on the course of surprise

The best Italian on Saturday was Lara Della Mea, who finished 13th. For a long time it seemed as if Marta Rossetti could make it into the top ten. But the 25-year-old from Salò, who has not yet scored a single point in the slalom this season, slipped up while clearly in the lead and ended up only 15th. In the first run she was in eleventh place.
