Mikaela Shiffrin: Bad luck in the game, lucky in love

That doesn't happen every day: Mikaela Shiffrin gave up a half-time lead in Sölden on Saturday and "only" finished fifth. Even a romantic gesture didn't help.

Lucky in love, unlucky in gambling: This well-known saying applied to ski superstar Mikaela Shiffrin on Saturday in Sölden. The American was in the lead at halftime in the first giant slalom of the season, but fell back to fifth place in the decision – something that is not really common from the 97-time World Cup winner. But Sölden is Sölden, which means that anything can happen here.

Shiffrin's fiancé Aleksander Aamodt Kilde was there to cheer her on on Saturday. The Norwegian, who is unable to compete in any races this season due to injury, crossed his fingers for his loved one at the finish. After the first run, there was a special encounter. When Shiffrin crossed the finish line with her best time, she was greeted by Kilde - and of course there was a kiss.

Even if this romantic gesture did not bring any luck for the second run, it showed how much Shiffrin and Kilde are in love. The American gave her Norwegian a lot of praise in an interview with Eurosport Rosen: "Aleks is perfect, he understands me 100 percent and he gives me so much energy. I love talking to him about skiing. Even now (after the first run, editor's note). He is just wonderful."

Even though Shiffrin could not win the race on Saturday, she is 100 percent confident in love.
