With her new love: Ski queen is on cloud nine

During her career as a skier, Maria Riesch often had butterflies in her stomach. Olympic victories, world championship titles, overall World Cup triumphs—you can't really achieve more in her sport. But now the butterflies in her stomach aren't of a sporting nature, but of a personal nature. She's newly in love.

In August 2024, the 40-year-old separated from her husband Marcus Höfl after 13 years of marriage. Six months later, Riesch revealed: "Yes, I'm in a new relationship." The new man at her side is Austrian Johann Schrempf, who works as a cruise ship manager and has been friends with the skier for a long time.

Now love has emerged from this, and in an interview with the magazine Bunte The smitten couple opened up about their lives for the first time. "Johann is simply uncomplicated," says Riesch, "and he makes sure I'm doing well. He's not afraid of anything and is extremely thoughtful of others. And he cooks incredibly well and is a wonderful host."

Age and size difference not a problem The two can only laugh about the age difference (Riesch is 40, Schrempf 65), as well as the height difference: The skier is half a head taller than her new partner. "It's nice to be able to look up to a woman," jokes the Austrian, adding: "A relationship on equal terms has nothing to do with physical size or age."

The skier and the cruise ship manager certainly enjoy their time together. Sports, travel, and the mountains – these are passions they share. Even though there was one mishap: Their first ski vacation together ended with Schrempf in the hospital, diagnosed with a torn cruciate ligament. But that doesn't dampen their newfound love one bit.
