Ski tragedy shortly before the wedding

The winter sports world is mourning the loss of a famous extreme skier who died in a tragic accident last week.

Catherine “Kasha” Rigby has left her mark on the ski world. She is considered a pioneer and one of the best telemark skiers in the world. And she combined this special type of skiing with her second great passion: extreme skiing in open terrain. She was the first to descend some of the world's well-known peaks - including an 8000 meter mountain in the Himalayas. Rigby competed in telemark and extreme ski competitions worldwide.

But now the great passion has become fatal for the American. Last week, the 54-year-old died in an avalanche in the Kosovo ski resort of Brezovica. Particularly tragic: This all happened shortly before her wedding. "We wanted to get married in September," Rigby's fiancé Magnus Wolfe Murray told the news outlet AP.

Tragic misfortune

It was Murray who experienced the tragedy first hand. The two were off-piste when they were hit by an avalanche. Although it was a relatively small avalanche, Catherine Rigby was thrown into a tree. She died within a few seconds as a result of the impact.
