“Doro” raves about South Tyrol: everything she needs

After Dorothea Wierer treated herself to a week of sun, sea and beach in Dubai and then began her summer training in Viareggio, which she then continued in Fiemme Valley together with her male colleagues from the Italian national team, the 33-year-old couldn't wait , to finally come home again: “I wanted to go back to South Tyrol, I was away practically the whole year.”

But the stay between the familiar mountains should not be for relaxation, at least not for physical relaxation. Because in winter, the runner-up in last year's overall biathlon rankings will have to fire on all cylinders again. “Doro” already has a lot on his mind to be in the appropriate physical condition. She made it clear how perfect South Tyrol is for preparation: “Running, cycling, roller skiing, yoga are all preparation activities for the biathlon. Running is particularly important. I have no problem finding opportunities between Dobbiaco, Reischach and Bruneck.”

The South Tyrolean also feels right at home on the hiking trails, also because she loves nature: “I really enjoy hiking. A good tip is the Alpe di Siusi, where I saw wonderful marmots that had just been born last year, or the Pustertal." An essential part of a biathlete's training is, of course, roller skiing: "It's a very good training because it gives you allows to reproduce the technical gestures of cross-country skiing. There’s no shortage of opportunities in my area either.”

But the world champion is also at home on a bike: “There are many wonderful, flat stages on the cycle paths in the Pustertal. If it's going to be steep, I go to the Mendel Pass or to Val Martell. Last year I also drove the Stelvio. It's tiring, but once you're at the top there's great satisfaction. I end up pedaling for four to five hours every time I set off.”

However, so many years of training have not yet allowed Wierer to see everything that beautiful South Tyrol has to offer: “I would like to go to the Plose above Brixen and to Mals in Vinschgau. I know these are beautiful areas, but between competitions and training I often don’t have the time.”
