The grapes are hanging high in the individual race in Ruhpolding

Emil Hegle Svendsen is in top shape a month before the start of the Winter Olympics. The Norwegian, who won the sprint race and the pursuit in Oberhof last week, won the individual competition in Ruhpolding on Saturday. Despite a mistake on the shooting range, the 28-year-old Scandinavian prevailed in a time of 48.58,5 minutes and celebrated the 34th World Cup success of his career.

Emil Hegle Svendsen relegated the two Russians Alexey Volkov and Evgeny Ustyugov to the places of honor. For the Russian team, which will be under particularly strong pressure in Sochi, this is a good sign 27 days before the Olympic flame is lit in their own country.

As far as the overall ranking is concerned, Emil Hegle Svendsen was able to catch up with World Cup leader Martin Fourcade (France) by 60 points. This was not at the start on Saturday. Fourcade's lead over Svendsen is still 109 points.

South Tyroleans are weakening

Of the Italian team, only Christian De Lorenzi was in good form in Ruhpolding. He finished 12th with a perfect shooting performance. The three South Tyroleans at the start were completely different. Markus Windisch missed his target three times and came 44th, almost four minutes behind. Lukas Hofer got four “tickets” and took 48th place. Dominik Windisch finished the individual competition with six remaining targets (20) and almost nine minutes behind only in 91st place.

On Sunday, in the pursuit competition, Hofer and Markus Windisch will try to make amends. The Biathlon World Cup entourage then moves to Antholz. South Tyrol's biathlon fans have been looking forward to the most important winter sports event in their homeland for weeks.
