Patrick Braunhofer: The next step is here

Right at the start he got his first World Cup points with a 24th place. More were to follow, he qualified for the World Cup and later for the first time in a mass start at the World Cup in Östersund. But it was also a winter in which health didn't quite cooperate. In December he was in bed for 10 days with the flu and had to miss two World Cups. And then it hit him again during the World Cup, this time with a bad cold. Otherwise even more would have been possible for the 25-year-old from Ridnaun.

“It was definitely a positive season. “I showed what I can do in individual races,” says Braunhofer, looking back. Of course, he regrets that he wasn't fit all season. “The cold at the World Cup was particularly frustrating. The World Cup nomination was a highlight of my career so far. We then trained very well in Ridnaun, I was in really good shape when we went to Oberhof, but it hit me there. I didn’t compete in the individual competition anymore because it just didn’t make sense,” says Braunhofer.

He didn't get through the preparation for the new season without illnesses either. However, he does not believe that he is particularly susceptible to infections, but sees this as a result of the corona pandemic: “After two years of wearing a mask, the immune system may have been weakened.”

Improve on the trails In the new season, Braunhofer wants to confirm last winter's performance and, if possible, improve it. “There is still one step missing, but I know that I can still improve,” says Braunhofer. There is still enough potential for improvement, especially on the cross-country ski trail. Shooting, on the other hand, has always been his strength. His biggest wish for next season is that he does better in the relays than last winter. “I always spanked them except for one time. And that was particularly bitter because in the relay your teammates always pay extra if you are bad.”
