Family instead of biathlon: Denise Herrmann-Wick is calling it quits

On Tuesday evening, shortly before the start of the last World Cup stage in Oslo, Denise Herrmann-Wick announced the end of her career. The races at the legendary Holmenkollen will be the last of her glorious career. The same applies to another biathlon star, namely Marte Olsbu Røiseland, who also announced her resignation on Tuesday. The 34-year-old deliberately chose Oslo as her final performance location, as she explains on her social media channels: “Right here, in this special place, my long journey as a biathlete and cross-country skier should now come to an end. Of course with a bit of sadness. But first and foremost with full gratitude for the many beautiful and emotional moments that I was able to experience in both sports.” “This is exactly where my path as a biathlete and cross-country skier should end.” Denise Herrmann-Wick Herrmann-Wick was Germany's most successful cross-country skier for a long time before she switched to biathlon seven years ago. As a ski hunter, she collected nine World Cup and two Olympic medals as well as ten World Cup victories and a total of 22 podium places. This season she was the only German biathlete to reach the podium, six times. The DSV athlete was crowned sprint world champion just a few weeks ago and is also the reigning individual Olympic champion. As a cross-country skier, she also made it onto the podium in third place in the relay at the 2014 Winter Games. Family at the center From now on, the winter sports athlete from Saxony will aim for destinations far away from the cross-country ski trails. Together with her husband, the former cross-country skier Thomas Wick, she wants to settle down permanently in her adopted home of Ruhpolding and start a family. Before that happens, there are three more World Cup appearances on the program from Friday - the last in Denise Herrmann-Wick's legendary career.
