Bitter World Cup disappointment for Daniel Grassl

After a good short program, Daniel Grassl went into the free skate of the world's best figure skaters in eighth place. But instead of making another leap forward, things went in the opposite direction: the exceptional talent from Merano slipped back to twelfth place.

Grassl wanted to top his best World Cup result to date, a seventh place from last year, and at the same time underline his emerging form with a top performance. He tackled his free skate with corresponding ambition: He started with a quadruple Lutz, followed by a quadruple Rittberger and a quadruple flip. The South Tyrolean was able to do all of these, but the jumps were not flawless and he also made a mistake in the rest of the program. The result? The jury was very strict and rated his performance with “only” 244,43 points.

In the end, Grassl had to make do with twelfth place, which meant he also had to give way to his Italian teammate Matteo Rizzo. After a great race to catch up, he finished ninth in the rankings. Maurizio Zandron from Bolzano, who competes for Austria, took 24th place, while Jari Kessler from Nonsberg, who lives in Kaltern and runs for Croatia, was already eliminated from the short program on Thursday ( SportNews berichtete ).

Shoma Uno causes Japanese cheers Japan's figure skating superstar Shoma Uno took the world title. He won with 196,51 points from the free program and a total of 301,14 points ahead of Junhwan Cha (296,03) and thus defended his title. Cha, on the other hand, won South Korea's historic first ever World Cup individual medal. The American Ilia Malinin came third (288,44).

In ice dancing, Italy celebrated its first medal win in nine years early on Saturday morning (CET): veterans Charlène Guignard and Marco Fabbri took silver with a personal record of points (219,85). The world title went to the US duo Madison Chock/Evan Bates (USA/226,01).
