“It’s time to accept that I wasn’t good enough.”

“My performances were not good, not to say that they were miserable.” The German ski jumper Eric Fuchs addressed his fans with these honest words. He loses his place in the Bundeswehr's sports support group and as a consequence ends his career.

“Today is one of the hardest days of my life, if not the hardest,” said the 23-year-old in a post on social media. “My performances last season weren't good enough, not to say they were miserable. Therefore, I have lost my place in the Bundeswehr's sports support group and will end my career at this point." Harsh words from a young ski jumper.

A special thank you goes to his family. Because his biggest concern is that he has disappointed her. For years they have done everything to ensure that he can chase his dream. That dream is now over once and for all: “It’s time for me to grow up, bury my childhood dream and accept that I just wasn’t good enough.”

No trace of bitterness

Even if the realization is bitter and the decision was not easy for him, he appears calm and reflective. He wouldn't want to miss the time and do it all over again. “It is and remains simply the best sport, because nothing compares to the feeling of flying,” said the Oberstdorf native. He doesn't reveal what his plans are for the future.

Fuchs has achieved several podium finishes at FIS Cups in recent years. He even won one of these races in August 2022. In the 2023/24 season, the 23-year-old only performed moderately. His best result was a 23rd place at the FIS Cup in Kandersteg, otherwise he has ranks between 24 and 50.
