Female athlete of the year hurtles into the top ten

Ski crosser Katrin Ofner, who was recently voted athlete of the year in Styria, fell while training for the World Cup and injured herself. Despite the injuries, she achieved an impressive 10th place in the subsequent World Cup race.

On Sunday, 33-year-old Katrin Ofner took part in the finals for the Ski Cross World Cup on the Reiteralm. During a training session shortly before the World Cup race, she suffered several bruises and a broken ankle and managed to finish 10th despite her injuries and the difficult track conditions.

The Klagenfurt native wrote on Instagram on February 25th: “10th place at the home World Cup. Unfortunately, after a fall in training before the race, it was no longer possible.” Whether the injuries will be an obstacle to the two upcoming World Cup stops in Veysonnaz (Switzerland) and Idre Fjäll in Sweden remains to be seen.

The conditions were anything but ideal: shortly before the two racing days on Saturday and Sunday, a spontaneous onset of winter began with 40 centimeters of fresh snow in the ski areas west of Styria. For the route operators this meant “overtime” and “working at full speed” and for the top athletes it meant difficult conditions on the descent due to the sometimes heavy snowfall and the poor route conditions.

There were further strange scenes at the World Cup race: the bronze medal was shared by the two Swiss women Talina Gantenbein and Margaux Dumont. Gantenbein fell and Dumont missed a goal, which is why both ended up in third place after the final tally. Frenchwoman Marielle Berger Sabbatel took second place and Canadian Brittany Phelan took her first World Cup victory.

The Frenchman Youri Duplessis Kergomard secured victory in the men's race at the Reiteralm ahead of the Trentino Simone Deromedis (SportNews berichtete).
