The South Tyrolean hopes rest on him: Dominik Zuech from Lana.

San Candido is ready: “Really cool to drive”

The South Tyrolean winter sports festival continues. This week the Ski Cross World Cup will be taking place in San Candido for the 14th time. After the two qualifications on Tuesday and Wednesday, the “Formula 1 of skiing” on Thursday, December 21st and Friday, 22nd December will be about the day's victory, as well as important points for the overall ranking. The race track at Haunold is in fantastic condition.

On Monday the official training took place in Innichen in imperious weather and bitter cold. The best ski crossers in the world were each allowed to complete three runs on the Haunold. Afterwards, they were enthusiastic about the 1340 meter long route with an altitude difference of 229 meters in the 3 Zinnen Dolomite region. “It's a little faster than I expected. The jumps also went a little further than expected. The underground is very compact. Overall, the track is really cool to drive again, I'm really looking forward to performing here in front of our people," said local hero Dominik Zuech (Lana).

Performance is also urgently needed in the coming days. The two qualifying runs take place on Tuesday and Wednesday, in which tickets for the final runs on Thursday and Friday are purchased. The qualifiers and finals on Thursday begin at 11.45 a.m., while the decision on Friday begins at 12 p.m.

Will the Näslund series continue?

Canadian Jared Schmidt and Frenchwoman Marielle Berger Sabbatel came to San Candido as overall leaders. Berger Sabbatel was already able to celebrate victory once at Haunold in 2019. The defending champions, however, are Mathias Graf from Austria and Reece Howden (Canada), who each won a race last year, as well as the Swede Sandra Näslund, who won the last four finals in San Candido and is the record winner with a total of six triumphs.

“The preparations were very intensive. But now everything is set for a great week dedicated to the sport of ski cross. The conditions on the slopes are excellent and we will do everything we can to ensure that the best athletes in the world feel at home away from it - just as they have been used to in Innichen for a decade and a half," says Gabriel Fauster from the organizing team WSV Innichen finally.
