The shadow man curves into the spotlight

Whenever the Azzurri have successes in parallel snowboarding, the South Tyroleans are almost always responsible. Roland Filehner, Aaron March, Edwin Coratti and Daniele Bagozza are among those athletes for whom a podium place or a victory is no surprise. Things are a little different with Maurizio Bormolini. The 28-year-old from Livigno has been competing in the World Cup since 2011 and also made it to the podium in four individual races (second and third twice each), but somehow he was always in the shadow of his successful teammates. On Tuesday he came into the spotlight himself.

Bormolini left everyone behind in the parallel slalom in Bad Gastein and celebrated the first World Cup victory of his career. In Bad Gastein of all places, a place that is both a blessing and a curse for snowboarders. It was here that he took three of his four podium places in recent years, but it was also here that he tore his cruciate ligament and experienced the darkest hour of his career.

"Finally! I've been waiting for this victory for a long time," said an overjoyed Bormolini after the race in the Austrian health resort. The fact that the Azzurro could achieve a big coup was already indicated in the qualification, in which he set the fastest time. He then confidently drove the thing home in the knockout round.

March strong, fish out early The race was a mixed bag for the South Tyroleans. Aaron March once again underlined his strong form and placed fifth in the final ranking. Marc Hofer also had a sense of achievement; he achieved his best result of the season in tenth place. Meanwhile, Edwin Coratti ended up in 12th place, Gabriel Messner was 16th, while there was disappointment for South Tyrol's current best snowboarder: Roland Filehner, like Daniele Bagozza, was eliminated in the qualification.

In the women's category, the Austrian Daniela Ulbing triumphed, beating Claudia Riegler in the final. There was no South Tyrolean at the start.
