Olympic track & much more: Dominik Fiwickeler is speaking now

“The feeling is good again, but it starts from scratch again for everyone. “There are a lot of races in Germany, that doesn’t make it any easier,” says Fischnelller, making it clear that it will be difficult against the German tobogganers. Of the 9 World Cup races, 4 take place in Germany, as well as the World Championships, which are on the program in Altenberg at the end of January. After all, he likes Altenberg the best of the German railways. He came second in the World Cup last season and set the best time in the second run. He is therefore looking forward to the World Cup with confidence. The World Cup title would still be missing from his collection.

Fischlerner's biggest sporting goals, however, were an Olympic medal and the overall World Cup victory. He has now achieved both of them. “This World Cup victory was certainly an absolute highlight. I've narrowly missed the ball once just because I was disqualified in a race. I didn't know whether I would get this chance again. Of course it's great that it's worked out now," says the Meransner, who is now 30 years old and says himself: "I'm now one of the older ones in the World Cup and I bring a lot of experience with me."

With experience, Filehner has also gained a certain level of composure. “I don’t think about it so much anymore. If things go well, even better and if things go badly, nothing happens. Everything worked fine last winter. I was good with the material, I was quick at the start, I was in good shape physically and had no pain. And the many trips I’ve made everywhere have certainly helped too,” he says.

The fact that the material mentioned by Dominik Fiwickeler fits is primarily thanks to Ossi Haselrieder and Will Huber. Walter Plaikner also works a little in the background, doing the rough finishing work on Filehner's new rail.

“Preparation was perfect” The season starts quite late this time, but for him it could easily start now. "Everything is alright. The preparation was perfect, I am healthy and feel comfortable with the material,” says Fischnelller, who incidentally knows the first World Cup station, Lake Placid, particularly well. His girlfriend Emily Sweeney lives there, and he also spent two months with her this year and also took a trip to Texas. “However, we experienced heat there of over 40 degrees.”

Filehner is someone for whom training (especially in the weight room) is not a chore, but rather a pleasure. “It would be a punishment for me if I wasn’t allowed into the weight room,” he clarifies. After his cousin Kevin resigns, he has a new roommate. It is Leon Felderer, with whom he shared the toboggan when some of the material was temporarily missing after a flight back from China.

Olympic track: “Huge disappointment” The home advantage at the next Olympic Games is unlikely to happen. The railway in Cortina d'Ampezzo will not be built. Cesana is now being discussed, but the races will probably be held in Igls or St. Moritz because the IOC has spoken out against Cesana. “The disappointment is of course huge. I believed until the end that things would somehow work out with Cortina. For us, that would also have meant that we wouldn't always have to travel around the world to be able to train. Then this dream burst. Afterwards Cesana was discussed, that would have been okay and especially good for me because I'm one of the few who still drove there. I don’t know what the current state of things is, but it will most likely be Igls,” believes Filehner.

Above all, he is worried about the future of tobogganing in South Tyrol: “I'm surprised that we can still be at the forefront even though we don't have a track. But I don't know how long this will last. It’s a huge effort, especially for young people. Who else will do that at some point?”
