In the thousandth thriller: Vötter/Oberhofer win the European Championship medal

The 55th European Championships in artificial track tobogganing opened in Innsbruck-Igls on Saturday - and right away with a South Tyrolean medal win! Andrea Vötter and Marion Oberhofer raced to silver.

A record number of 17 women's double-seaters ventured through the North Tyrolean ice channel. In the end, the title went to Jessica Degenhardt and Cheyenne Rosenthal, who benefited from a mistake by the clearly leading Austrians Selina Egle and Lara Kipp in the second run.

The German duo prevailed in the heart-stopping final with a razor-thin lead of 14 thousandths over last season's overall World Cup winners, Andrea Vötter and Marion Oberhofer. With the silver medal, the woman from Völs and her teammate from Rodeneck once again showed that they are absolutely world-class in this discipline - on all tracks in the world.

Although no medal, the men's doubles achieved three top ten placements in the gold triumph of the Austrians Thomas Steu/Wolfgang Kindl: Emanuel Rieder and Simon Kainzwaldner impressed in fifth place, the up-and-coming Ivan Nagler and Fabian Malleier came seventh and the duo Ludwig Rieder/Lukas Gufler took ninth place.

The young Feldthurn player Verena Hofer also took ninth place in the women's singles category, equaling her best World Cup result and also winning gold in the U23 classification. The Austrian local hero Madeleine Egle surprisingly took the single-seater European championship title.
