New discipline to conquer Luge World Cup

There will be a new development in the Luge World Cup starting next winter. A new race format has been introduced so that men and women can work together even more closely.

During the luge summer congress in Lake Placid, it was decided that the unpopular sprint races would be canceled in the future. The format always flew under the radar during its World Cup days and was unable to overcome its wallflower status. The sprint races have been canceled with immediate effect, as the international luge federation FIL announced.

In future, there will be a mixed World Cup in which men and women will compete together. There will be a mixed World Cup for singles and a separate one for doubles. The interesting thing about this is that the next sled can leave the starting gate immediately when the other has reached the finish line (a touch pad must be touched at the finish line). An automatic starting gate opens. Incidentally, if a nation cannot field a mixed team, it can "team up" with another country.

The Mixed World Cup will be making its debut in Lillehammer (NOR). The first World Cup event of the coming winter will take place there from November 30th to December 1st. Further Mixed World Cups – each for singles and doubles – will take place in Altenberg (GER/January) and PyeongChang (KOR/February).
