Between Fish and Colorful Clothes

When she was named Sportswoman of the Year, she put on her finest outfit. At competitions, she slips into skin-tight racing suits. In her private life, she prefers loose skirts and dresses, as colorful as possible: This is Evelin Lanthaler, South Tyrol's Sportswoman of the Year. She is also getting ready to start the new competition season, but reveals completely different aspects of her life in the winter sports radius.

More or less everything is known about the luger Evelin Lanthaler. Multiple world champion (7 titles) and European champion (9 titles), eight-time winner of the overall World Cup, winner of 51 World Cup races and the great figurehead of natural track luge for a decade - this is well known to sports fans. That is why she was voted South Tyrolean Sportswoman of the Year for the first time last spring. But the Passeier native revealed other, lesser-known traits to us, off the top of her head.

The title of "Sportswoman of the Year" came as a surprise to Evelin, but it still filled her with great joy. "It was simply wonderful to be at the top and to leave some very renowned, successful athletes behind. But I also see this award as recognition for our sport, which really increases the importance of natural track tobogganing. I was particularly pleased about that." “It was just wonderful to be at the top.” Evelin Lanthaler Nevertheless, the trophy presented in April has not changed the life of the top athlete. She still loves being the "friendly dream daughter-in-law next door". But she admits that she is more easily recognized on the streets and is spoken to more often. But: The whole thing is within limits. She is hardly recognized outside of the country's borders, and she is undisturbed on vacation.

She likes to wear bright clothes, she likes it colorful, almost "girly," as she says herself, and she prefers skirts or dresses to pants. She only wears them - if at all - at work, when she works as a waitress from April to mid-November. This is practically a must for Evelin Lanthaler, because in a non-Olympic sport she lacks access to sports groups, which could also evaporate a number of financial worries.

A “normal” world champion And so the 33-year-old stands by her wife in the "Martl" restaurant in St. Leonhard, serving guests from all over the world - with the friendly smile and fine manners that are her own. It can happen that local customers ask her about tobogganing, and most of the time it is compliments, appreciative remarks, questions and encouragement. Holiday guests who spend their holidays in Passeier accommodations, however, are usually informed in advance by their hosts and look with a certain admiration at the woman who serves them pizzas or delicious pasta dishes.

It can happen that you exchange a few words. "But I can't do that for too long because I have to do my work," smiles Evelin. She also really likes the kitchen at her workplace and has an absolute favorite dish. "You have to try the noodles with all kinds of fish when you're here," she whispers to the reporter who wants to get more insider information out of her.

Lanthaler likes to experience new things in her free time.

Although she is a hard-working employee, the tobogganer still has time for various activities that she loves in her free time. Sitting still is not Evelin's thing, and so she is drawn to the mountains - or she goes traveling. The summer of 2024 was filled with a vacation on Mykonos, and now in November she was in Morocco with her boyfriend, where, among other things, she camped in a desert camp and also dared to go on a ride on a dromedary.

Her partner Daniel is a loyal companion on mountain tours anyway, and the top tobogganer has a few favorite destinations: the rear of the Passeier Valley in the direction of the Timmelsjoch is one of Lanthaler's favorite places, where she can enjoy peace, quiet, and closeness to nature. She doesn't want to reveal the exact location, because that is her place of power, where she can recharge her batteries. But the Cir peaks on the Grödner Joch also fascinate Evelin Lanthaler.

Her partner Daniel is also responsible for Evelin moving to St. Martin. Nevertheless, she still likes to visit her family in Platt, where she grew up and where she had her first experiences with tobogganing. Love for one's homeland never rusts. And the athlete also rejects talk of wedding bells. Marriage is not an issue yet. At least not yet.

Then the conversation drifts back to the sport of luge, which Lanthaler wants to continue as long as she enjoys it. She already sees potential successors on the horizon, in whom she sees herself reflected: "When I was a beginner, I looked up to the Gietl sisters with admiration. Now I experience the exact opposite, and I'm happy to pass on tips."

Of course, even South Tyrol’s reigning Sportswoman of the Year cannot predict whether there will ever be a second Evelin Lanthaler in this sport.
