Meran confirms AlpsHL participation: “Together we are strong”

This season, HC Meran made it into the playoffs of the Alps Hockey League (AlpsHL) for the first time. Despite this success, the big shock followed on Saturday: The Eagles made a statement threatening to withdraw from the championship. In the evening, however, all fans could breathe a sigh of relief.

“How things will continue in Merano in the future is still completely open. Although we are enrolled in the AlpsHL, we could still withdraw by March 15th,” said President Stefan Kobler before the start of the pre-playoffs. Many thought that reaching the post-season would guarantee staying in the AlpsHL. One day after the deadline, the Adler published a statement that was astonishing.

“Today the meeting took place with the extended board about the future of the club. Due to rising costs, questionable referee decisions and clubs leaving, not everyone was convinced of the Alps Hockey League project. The final decision will be made today and then announced,” it said. A few hours later the certainty was there.

The Eagles remain

“We have made the decision to confirm participation in the AlpsHL. The goals for the 2023/24 season were met by reaching the playoffs, which we are very proud of. We are now building on this success. However, this is only possible with your help. The club needs the support of all sponsors, helpers and fans in order to be able to walk this path together and to further increase the ice hockey euphoria in the city of Merano. “Together we are strong,” the statement reads.

After the EHC Lustenau and the KAC Future Team, the Fassa Falcons also withdrew from the AlpsHL on Friday. As of now, the coming season would take place with 13 teams, five of them from South Tyrol: The Rittner Buam, the Wipptal Broncos, the Unterland Cavaliers, HC Meran and HC Gherdëina.
