Dolomiten Cup: Let the games begin

Summer took a brief breather in July, but now it's showing off its very best side. In short: Just in time for the Ferragosto holiday week, it's really hot again in South Tyrol. Only in Neumarkt, a small but charming oasis of cool air is resisting the scorching heat: The Dolomiten Cup, one of Europe's most famous ice hockey preparatory tournaments, will take place from Friday to Sunday at the Würtharena in Neumarkt. Dynamo Pardubice (Czech Republic), Vålerenga Ice Hockey (Norway), the Löwen Frankfurt, and EV Landshut (both Germany) will battle for the coveted trophy.

It all kicks off on Friday at 20 p.m., when Dynamo Pardubice and EV Landshut clash. Pardubice enters the match as runners-up in the Czech league – one of the strongest in Europe. Meanwhile, the iconic Bavarian club Landshut plays in the DEL2, Germany's second-highest league, and will enter the match as the underdog. Landshut is bringing a true ice hockey legend to the Lower Bavarian region: Uwe Krupp has been the coach of the Lower Bavarians since this summer. As a player, he once won a Stanley Cup and played more than 800 games in the NHL. Krupp later served as the German national coach for many years and subsequently coached several highly decorated clubs, including the Kölner Haie, the Eisbären Berlin, and HC Lugano.

The second semifinal on Saturday, starting at 20 p.m., is also a tough one. The Frankfurt Lions will face Vålerenga Ice Hockey. Frankfurt played a key role in launching the Dolomitencup 19 years ago. Today, the Hesse team is a fixture in the DEL, Germany's top ice hockey league. Vålerenga Ice Hockey's performance will be exciting. With 26 championship titles, the Oslo-based club is Norway's most successful ice hockey club.

As always, the finals are on Sunday: The match for third place is scheduled for 15.45:3 p.m., and the grand final of the Dolomiten Cup will take place at 20 p.m. Tickets are still available for all tournament days.
