An Olympic champion will play in Bolzano in the future

“By signing a three-year contract, one of the most spectacular transfers in the history of European women’s ice hockey has been achieved,” writes the club. Laura Fortino, a permanent member of the Canadian national team until 2019, will wear the Eagles jersey for the next three seasons. The signature was “preceded by months of tough negotiations in which the Italian ice sports association FISG around Andrea Gios, Thomas Rottensteiner and Marcello Cobelli provided valuable support.” The initial contact with the Canadian came about through Stefan Zisser. The defender from Hamilton is a legend in her homeland - at least since she gave the pass for the decisive goal in the final game against long-term rivals USA in the game for Olympic gold in Sochi 2014. Her career reads like a picture book: four years in the NCAA at Cornell University (under the well-known Doug Derraugh in Bolzano) with an incredible 132 points in 133 games. 64 games with the Canadian national team, 99 games in the Canadian Women's Hockey League CWHL (one of the first professional leagues in the world) with 82 points and 33 games in the professional league PWHPA with 23 points. In addition to various personal awards, there is also an Olympic silver medal in 2018, World Cup gold in 2012 and 4 silver medals at world championships. Olympics with Italy? When she did not declare for the PWHL draft last year after a strong season with Team Harvey's in the PWHPA, it caused a stir in Canada. But Fortino had good reasons and chose Italy. Not least because she recently acquired an Italian passport and therefore has a very good chance of being part of the Italian team at the 2026 Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina. This would make her one of the few athletes in the world to take part in the Olympic Games with two different nations. Fortino is only the second Canadian international to move to Europe, along with Jennifer Wakefield, who has played in Sweden since 2014. The 32-year-old will join the Eagles at the beginning of October. In this first season she will return to Canada at some point, where she will have to take some exams to finish her university career.
