Horror start in Val Gardena: “We expected more”

The start of the season was anything but ideal for HC Gröden. After seven games, the meager balance is: five bankruptcies, one defeat in extra time and one overtime win. As a result, the Furies are at the bottom of the league with just three points, even though Bradley McGowan, probably the best player in the league, is in the Val Gardena ranks. We spoke to captain Simon Pitschieler about the current situation.

Simon Pitschieler, how do you describe the current situation? “It's certainly not easy at the moment because we expected a lot more. On the one hand, we can't manage to play our game and when you're at the bottom, it's even harder. The quality of our team certainly does not reflect our current position in the table. You can almost say that we haven’t really arrived at this year’s season.”

What do you think HC Gröden needs to do better in the next games? “We just have to unite and act as a team. It is particularly important to play simple ice hockey, train hard and never give up. The many strong players also have to lead the team better and everyone has to find their role in the team. What do you expect from the games against Cortina and Fassa? “I expect us to concentrate primarily on our defensive game and stay compact at the back. We have to help our goalies. That's what we've been missing in the last few games. If we succeed in this, we will score more goals up front and win both games.”

Derby week for the Rittner Buam There are also some very interesting encounters on the program in the Alps Hockey League. For example, the Rittner Buam will have two derbies within a few days. On Thursday the Buam will host the Unterland Cavaliers at home and on Saturday the Rittner will be in Vipiteno. The Rittner Buam will have to do without Lois Fink, who was suspended for three games. HC Meran urgently needs points, as the Passerstädter are currently in second-to-last place in the table. In the IHL On Thursday, however, there will be the South Tyrolean duels between Brixen and Eppan and Kaltern and Toblach.
