Annoying new development: Bolzano gets a slap in the face.
This away trip was a waste of time. HCB Südtirol Alperia suffered a heavy defeat in Vienna on Sunday – partly due to an annoying new development.

With 145 goals, HC Bolzano boasts the second-best offense in the ICE Hockey League. However, in their 41st game of the season, Bolzano's star forwards, including Cole Schneider and Brad McClure, ran out of steam. Against the Vienna Capitals, the Foxes failed to score for the first time this championship, suffering a 0-3 defeat.
An unfortunate first, but one man in particular was delighted. Sebastian Wraneschitz, normally the backup goalie for Vienna, celebrated his first shutout in his 13th game of the season. Especially in the first period, he repeatedly thwarted the Bolzano attackers, and afterwards, he and his teammates, including former HCB defenseman Simon Bourque, shut down the defense.
Samuelsson as the unlucky one
The same cannot be said of the HCB defense, which was missing Mark Barberio (injured) and Dylan DiPerna (healthy scratch). Careless mistakes once again proved disastrous. Philip Samuelsson, in particular, who has been heavily criticized, simply can't shake his bad luck and was decisively involved in two of the goals conceded. The 0-1 goal perfectly encapsulated his predicament: behind his own net, the Swede played a no-look pass behind him, directly to Vienna's Benjamin Lanzinger, who gratefully accepted the gift. However, Samuelsson's teammates on offense were anything but brilliant that evening. They were particularly ineffective on the power play. Vienna, still fighting for a playoff spot, was simply more hungry.
The highlights
| Samuelsson's Faux Pas I | Behind his own goal, Samuelsson plays a no-look pass behind him – and thus directly onto Lanzinger's stick, who says thank you and scores to make it 1-0 (13th minute). |
| The ex stabs | Mitch Hults, Bolzano's top scorer three years ago, penetrates the Bolzano zone with great speed during the power play, moves in front of the goal and leaves Harvey no chance (36th minute). |
| Samuelsson's Faux Pas II | Playing a man down, Samuelsson tries to clear the puck but accidentally hits his teammate Gersich. From there, the puck goes to Souch, who suddenly finds himself alone in front of Harvey and seals the 3-0 final score (45th minute). |
A win would have mathematically secured the Foxes' direct playoff qualification. However, that's only a matter of time. They continue their campaign on Wednesday with an away game against the Black Wings Linz. HC Pustertal will then host the Graz99ers.
