Bolzano gets a new ice rink

A new era of ice sports is beginning in Bolzano! In addition to the expansion of the Sparkasse Arena, another ice stadium is to be built in the heart of the state capital.

For decades, Bozen has suffered from a lack of ice facilities. The Sparkasse Arena, which serves as a venue for HC Bozen, among others, is at full capacity, while the Sill is only partially available. This has resulted in many young ice athletes taking a different path and in the past entire clubs have even stopped their activities. This is now set to change.

The city council made an important decision for all ice sports enthusiasts on Tuesday during its weekly meeting: As Vice Mayor Stephan Konder was quoted as saying in a municipal press release, a covered ice rink is to be built on Genuastrasse in place of the existing roller skating and ice skating rink, the so-called Pista Zero, which will serve as a recreational and training area for hockey, speed skating and figure skating enthusiasts. The spectator stands are said to have space for up to 500 visitors.

Costs of 6,5 million euros

The city council decided today to allocate funds for the preparation of a technical and economic feasibility study. The size of the facility should correspond to the requirements of the Italian Ice Sports Federation.
“The ice rink is intended to encourage young people to exercise.” Bolzano's Vice Mayor Stephan Konder

According to Stephan Konder, who used to be a professional ice hockey player himself, it is especially important for young people to be able to practice their sport as close to where they live as possible. "The facility on Genuastrasse is in the middle of the city and can be easily reached by bike or motorbike as well as by public transport. We hope that the new ice rink will encourage many people, especially young people, to exercise, and that it will enrich the district and become a meeting place for families."

Sill is shut down

In order for the city council to be able to arrange for the construction of the relevant ancillary rooms - changing rooms, toilets, bar - the existing facility must first be converted from a "leisure facility" to a sports facility. The public works department will then commission a feasibility study for the construction of an enclosed ice rink that can be used both for ice sports and as a roller and inline skating rink. The cost of the facility is expected to be around 6,5 million euros. The construction period is expected to be 4 years.

After the completion of the second ice rink in the Sparkasse Arena and the new ice facility in Genuastrasse, the facility in Sill will be closed down permanently.
